Professional and academic training of migrants in Germany ,
The working paper "Professional and academic training of migrants" forms the fifth part of the series "Integrationsreport".
As an introduction, there is an overview of the current research and the most important data sources concerning the professional and academic education of migrants. Then the following areas are analysed based on empirical data: the participation of young foreigners in the dual system of career training (apprenticeship), their attendance at vocational schools and at (technical) universities in Germany. In the last-named area data was also sometimes used concerning "students with a migrant background". Finally, the career-related education level of the entire population (persons with and without a migrant background) is represented using data from the microcensus.
In all areas concerned it is evident that with regard to the vocational qualifications there are still clear disparities between the immigrant and existing population in Germany. However, it is necessary to make further differentiations of the migrant population according to nationality, context of origin, migration experience, age and gender. To an extent there are clear differences between the groups educated in this way with regard to their participation in vocational training and the career-related qualification level achieved.
