Existing data in the area of international migration – Europe and its neighbouring regions ,
Working Paper 18 delivers the results of the first part of the project "Migration projections and potential for migration". It examines both the relevant data for determining the potential of migration and the availability of data at an international level.
As a first step, by looking at theoretical approaches to migration in different disciplines, it establishes which data are relevant to determining migration potentials and projections. As a result, five factors are identified, on the basis of which these projections and potentials for migration can be determined.
The second stage involves discussion at a general level of the problems which arise in comparing migration data and the different factors that could impair data quality.
Finally, the range of data from selected regional offices of statistics in Europe, Africa and Asia, as well as from international organisations and institutions, is evaluated with respect to the five factors identified.
