Muslim Organisations and the State – European Perspectives , Date: 2010.03.16, format: report, area: Authority

The first volume of the new series Beiträge zu Migration und Integration (Contributions in Migration and Integration) deals with the question of Muslim self-organisation in European societies. The relationship between Muslim organisations and the state is analysed and presented in various contributions by eminent authors of this field. In addition to case studies on Germany, Spain, Italy, France and the United Kingdom, comparative articles outline the relation between Muslim representation and the state, the impact of different forms of government and accompanying state-church-relation, and the importance of civil society. The volume also explores challenges and chances of government intervention into Muslim self-organisation when looking for adequate interlocutors.

The volume is completed by two articles from a German perspective, one of which discusses the impact of identity on Muslim self-organisation while the other one provides a current overview of the state of research on Muslims in Germany.

The publication is based on the updated results of an international workshop, held by the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) at the end of 2007.
