Country report 65 - Saudi Arabia , , Human rights situation
Source: BAMF
This report deals with the humanitarian situation in Saudi Arabia. As one of the economically strongest countries in the region, Saudi Arabia is an important political player in the Middle East. Nevertheless, international observers describe the human rights situation in the country as alarming. Political parties and opposition movements are banned and demands for civil liberties as well as political dissent are prosecuted in many cases. Despite some reforms, extensive discrimination against women continues. The government's treatment of religious minorities such as the Shiite population as well as a large number of migrant workers is also problematic. Reports of torture, inhumane treatment and punishment are widespread; this and the excessive use of the death penalty are a cause for concern.
