Research project on "migration and development" in Germany

"Migration and development" has received increasing attention in international debates as migration can have positive impacts on the development of countries of origin. These effects can be seen, for example, in migrants' remittances.

Positive development effects of migration can be supported by cooperating with diaspora communities and supporting their development projects or, for example, through circular and return migration schemes.

Evaluation of the topic by the EU

At the EU level the nexus has been reassessed through the "Global Approach to Migration" which had been adopted in December 2005: the Global Approach aims at integrating migration and development coherently in order to solve the challenges of migration and development policy.

The institutionalization and discourses on "Migration and Development" in Germany were examined in the first part of the research project.

Interviews had been conducted with experts in German development co-operation and migration policy on the Federal, the Länder and local level. The institutionalization of "Migration and Development", the networking and co-ordination of the stakeholders and the development of various discourses in this area of politics were considered in theses interviews.

The role of migrant organisations

The second part of the project focused on the role of migrant organisations in the field of "Migration and Development". The research was based on qualitative interviews with representatives of migrant organizations and analyses development and transnational activities of migrant organizations.

The objective was to find policy-relevant options for supporting development activities and to discover links between German development, migration and integration policies. In particular, the analysis of migrant organisations’ activities gave crucial insights for new initiatives, pilot projects and cooperation in this field.
