The immigration motives, socio-structural composition, social context, integration potential and integration progress of migrants from Russia and the other CIS states were examined in this research project.

Focus on Jewish immigrants

A distinction was made between Jewish immigrants and ethnic German repatriates, with the focus on Jewish immigrants. This is a group for which there is a particular lack of reliable information on qualifications and socio-structural characteristics.

The project concentrated on the reception centre in Nuremberg in Bavaria. The socio-economic features of Jewish immigrants were studied in the first project phase based on documents of the reception centre that had not yet been evaluated. Particular emphasis was laid on the immigrants' vocational training and careers as well as their family ties.

In the second phase, a detailed written survey of newly immigrated Jewish immigrants was carried out at the reception centre. The possibility of also using the survey for ethnic German repatriates was reviewed. Using the regional reception centres rather than taking random samples represents a different way of accessing information about new immigrants.
