The Integration Panel. Evidence on participants at the beginning of their integration course including literacy skills , Date: 2010.01.14, Order number: FFWP29 , format: Working paper, area: Authority

The research project "The integration of integration course participants (integration panel)" analyses the effectiveness and sustainability of integration courses and therefore surveyed participants of integration courses including literacy skills on this, at the beginning of their courses in 2008.

The working paper contains a first descriptive analysis of the 500 surveyed participants of the integration course including literacy skills. Herein the socio-demographic structure, the knowledge of the written and oral language of origin and of the German language is referred to in detail. Furthermore, a wide range of other integration aspects is taken into account.

Hence, for the first time information is available on the composition of the courses. Observably, the proportion of illiterates that have never learned to read and write is 37 percent. Functional illiterates – persons who have learned to read and write, yet not sufficiently to take part equally in social life – account for 42 percent of all participants. Another 21 percent constitutes participants who have learned to read and write, but not in a language using the latin alphabet. The Working Paper concludes with an analysis of the subjective assessment of the courses by the participants.
