The housing situation of refugees , Date: 2018.05.11, format: brief analysis, area: Authority

Brief analysis 02|2018 provides information on how refugees were living in the second half of 2016 who had come to Germany from January 2013 up to and including January 2016. The Brief analysis also reveals what factors may influence whether refugees live in individual or shared accommodation.

Accommodation for refugees

Half of the refugees surveyed were living in individual accommodation one to three years after arriving in Germany, whilst the other half were therefore (still) living in shared accommodation. The housing situation of refugees only reflects their standing on the private housing market to a limited degree. In fact, their situation is, especially initially, highly legally regulated, and determined by institutional allocation processes. Besides the residence status, the Federal Land in which those concerned live, and their family situation, their knowledge of German and their income situation also effect their chances of living in individual accommodation instead of shared accommodation.

The availability of nearby German language courses or recreational opportunities has a major influence on refugees’ level of satisfaction.

When it comes to people living in individual or shared accommodation, the greatest differences in satisfaction emerged in the evaluation of privacy and the level of noise. 51 percent of those living in shared accommodation did not have a lockable, self-contained private space permanently available. All in all, they were also much more dissatisfied with their housing situation than refugees living in individual accommodation.

The BAMF's Brief analysis 02|2018 is based on data from the "IAB-BAMF SOEP survey of refugees 2016", in which roughly 4,500 refugees were surveyed in the second half of 2016.
