The integration course for students learning an additional alphabet comprises up to 1,000 lesson units, and targets migrants who have learned to read and write in a non-Roman alphabet. They now need to learn the Roman alphabet in order to be able to read and write and successfully learn German.

The integration course for students learning an additional alphabet starts by teaching the Roman alphabet. This is followed by the language course with up to 900 lesson units, and the orientation course that is made up of 100 lesson units. The language course enables students to learn German up to language level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR ), and the orientation course deals with topical areas such as politics in a democracy, history and responsibility, as well as the individual and society. The final stage of the integration course for students learning an additional alphabet is the two final examinations consisting of the "German language test for immigrants" (DTZ) and "Life in Germany" test.
