The Scientific Advisory Board at the Federal Office offers advice and support for the research carried out by the Federal Office. The committee was formed in 2005 and has a multi-disciplinary membership, composed of recognised academics.

Members of the Board are appointed for three years, and the appointment may be extended once only. The Scientific Advisory Board meets twice per year.

The responsibilities of the Scientific Advisory Board

  • Specialist recommendations on research concepts and research priorities
  • Providing support in theoretical and methodical questions related to migration and integration research, as well as in evaluating the results of the work
  • Promoting cooperation with researchers and research facilities covering the same and neighbouring areas of knowledge, as well as with practitioners
  • Advising on identifying new areas of research and in discussing of new methodical developments

  • Prof. Dr. Birgit Glorius (Chairwoman of the Advisory Board), Professor for Human Geography, focusing on European migration research, and member of the Institute for European Studies at the Technical University of Chemnitz
  • Prof. Dr. Christina Felfe de Ormeño, Professor for Applied Microeconomics, at the University of Konstanz
  • Prof. Dr. Martin Kroh, Professor for Methods of Empirical Social Research, focusing on quantitative methods, at the University of Bielefeld
  • Prof. Dr. Ines Michalowski, Professor for Sociology of Religion at the Institute for Sociology of the University of Münster
  • Prof. Dr. Jochen Oltmer, adjunct Professor for History of Migration at the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies and at the History Seminar of the University of Osnabrück,Vice President for Studies and Teaching at the University of Osnabrück
  • Prof. Dr. Daniel Thym, Professor of Public, European and International Law at the University of Konstanz, Director of the Research Center for Foreigners and Asylum Law at the University of Konstanz, Chairman of the advisory Board for Migration of Researches at the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees
